Facts are one thing the language we use to mimic facts is another.Communication requires translation This is true whether we transpose one language into another or whether we merely receive information conveyed in the printed word and, in a complicated, cyclically reiterative and interpretive process, we recast it in familiar patterns which snap into place decorously within our own unique mental worldviews, all independently construed. With great anticipation I d looked forward to The Cambridge [...]

third party 2009 05 13 Surprisingly cheap, huzzah Finished today in honor of this 105th Bloomsday A really nice collection of essays, none of which I d read before the first three and last, especially, are exquisite striving for highlight rather than exegesis Recommended for all amateur Joyce scholars, people like me who would have studied The Man had practical fields not existed this seems quite the most important Joyce study published since 1991 s The Joycean Labyrinth.
For what it s intended to do introduce the reader to the wide varieties of Joyce scholarship and its many possibilities this book is awesome I m sure it s not for everyone, but if this is what you re looking for, it s all here The further reading section is really helpful too.
Helpful essays occasionally dry.
A useful introduction, especially where it gives leads as to where to pursue further research topics.
