Ostensible pseudo murder mystery plot and characters quickly subside entirely into the heightened decadent mood and descriptions of a crumbling, rot hearted Venice where all is corruption and moral decay As such, actually super enjoyable I like Wittkopf s general M.O and bleak sense of humor quite lot, and this is suitable follow up to her also ultra decadent 70s debut, The Necrophiliac.
1.5 Awe, man I was really looking forward to this one I readThe Necrophiliacin 2015 and I adored it Hands down, it s one of my favourite books of all time, and because of that I picked up the rest of Wittkop s bibliography I will say that the writing is beautiful, but I expect that from a woman who was able to make a necrophiliac s misadventures seem beautiful and poetic However, where story is involved, this one fell short I felt as if nothing was happening throughout the novel The characters w [...]
The great short introduction provided excellent background for a beautifully made and designed book as usual for Wakefield Press , but the actual contents of the novel were a chore to read At times, Wittkop s writing is astounding she throws out these amazingly bleak sometimes hilariously bleak , nihilistic descriptions, shining an anti light of decay and morbidity on everyday life I especially loved her description of childbirth and of the rotten foundations of Venice a venice build on a sort o [...]

This was a good read mostly because of the vivid writing and the images of 18th century Venice that are conveyed But you ll know who did it and why by page 20 it s a no brainer It s a novella can be read in a few hours.
18th century Venice poisonings, rampant diseases, pestilent miasmas, grotesque human deformities, cabals, vermin, and flies And yet, Murder Most Serene isn t as compelling as Wittkop s novel about a bi sexual, pedo necrophilac, The Necrophiliac.
