I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this book Some of the early reviews mentioned that the author s descriptions were almost poetic and indeed, they were Only someone who truly loves and appreciates the land could have written this The characters were so well described that I felt I knew them, and whether or not I liked them, they won t easily be forgotten Do yourself a favor and get a copy of Ms Magennis first novel Keep your fingers crossed for .
I liked it BUT I live in this county and I recognized my town as the one with the broken down houses etc Didn t especially like the way we were portrayed.
What fun to read about a familiar place that has been fictionized.
This is a rambling tale about Lee Ann and her troubled relationship with her no good brother, Walker, who just got out of prison Lee Ann is the complete opposite of her brother and has tried to be a good sister and daughter.
The two main characters, Lee Ann and Walker, are both extremely believable, despite being so different from each other They are also, somehow, sympathetic, even though one is overly pious and the other a jerk The creation of these characters is a major achivement Another is the depiction of the landscape A third is the indictment of corruption in local government Really a great novel in many ways I am looking forward to from Bev Magennis.
Really nicely done novel where the locale is as much a character as the humans Magennis created two fascinating people in Leann and Walker You might not always agree with either or both of the but their contradictions are what make them come to life Magennis s writing flows beautifully Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC You will like this if you are interested in the lives of those who live in isolated areas, either physically or emotionally Thumbs up
I wasn t wild about this but it does to pass the time Good development on the part of the central character couldn t really offset the stereotypical bad boy in this slightly formulaic first novel The setting is well drawn as is the bad boys longing for home.
