Hauntingly brilliant I absolutely loved it Set in a time where there are wars over water and rural people have their water stolen from them When they steal it back, they are raped and beaten The protagonist, a writer, travels to the area to find out and puts herself at great risk in supporting the cause of the rural people The descriptions of this ravaged, drought stricken world are wonderful The novel has a mystical quality that is enhanced by the fear that underpins the protagonist s actions [...]
It is understandable why For the Mercy of Water by South African novelist Karen Jayes won the Sunday Times Fiction Prize in 2013 Her arresting plot is situated in a world that is unrecognisable at first glance, but soon becomes evidently familiar as the politics and culture of conflict seep out of the edges of her story Part of the mastery of Jayes work, lies in the fact that it is making such bold political statements, without ever making those points the subject of the story Water, as the cent [...]
This is the most beautifully written book I have read this year This is not a book to rush through though, you want to savour every word The plot centres around a young journalist who sets off on her own journey of self discovery while trying to find out what happened to a group of young girls in a remote village when officials from the water company came there She eventually finds the truth and discovers strength in herself that she was unaware of.
This was a good read It was a little hard to get into and a little slow at the end but overall I enjoyed it.
For the Mercy of Water by Karen JayesThis is a fictional book, in an unknown location at an unspecified period of time, with an unnamed narrator author, who upon reading an article about a grandmother who was still living in an abandoned village trying to care for the lives of a few young girls, decided that this was to be the story of her next book Securing support from an International publisher she finds her way to the village where everyone either has died or left except for Mother and her g [...]
This is a story set in a dystopian future in a country where drought has resulted in water wars and a power structure run by the company that controls the water in the country A writer becomes interested in a story she read of a woman who living in a village everyone thought was empty so she visits the village, meets the woman, and becomes very involved in the story the woman tells her This is a very strange but very intriguing book I found that it read like a first or second draft there were fa [...]
Not really my preferred type of book post apocalyptic scene where the war is about water , yet I admire how this difficult theme is explored and how the author uses names or omitting names to make a point The descriptions of the countryside and dreams are good.
The writing is beautiful The topic is horrendous but the beautiful writing kept me reading a topic I veer away from This book is about rape literally and figuratively It is set in a world where potable water is so scarce that human power is vested in control of water.
A strange, but intriguing story Very topical as it is set in the context of a land ravaged by severe drought, where water is controlled by those in power and they will go to any lengths to retain this power Beautiful descriptions.
A convincing dystopia and a harrowing tale highlighting the control of resources and gender violence, and yet the strength and defiance of women really a great read
I wan t angry The words I had written were not angry They were the truth, and the truth was only sad.
2.5 stars I think some people will love this book And the story is thought provoking if sad and violent Just wasn t my kind of story or style.
