This is a title that cannot simply be walked past It shouldn t It is beguiling Yes, he had problems with alcohol but also cultivated a creative mind and produced fine works of art There is a separation of the man s life of while drinking then after, when he stopped Is this book, through the narrator s story life before, after, the arc of Carver s existence, or none of the above I ll leave this problem of who is going to raise your kids and dip into the issues that arose by such a beguiling title [...]
This novel that I read outside or less in two sessions along the Pittsburgh Southside River Trail is a love letter to the city and to literature and lovers of novels I couldn t read it at home , was driven to read it along the Monongahela River, in a nice shady spot on the trail, a trail that starts with a view of downtown Pittsburgh and keeps going all the way to Washington D.C Pittsburgh has one of the best skylines in the country and is surrounded by neighborhoods that look at home in Europ [...]
Dan Charles is a writing professor at the University of Pittsburgh Interestingly, the back cover says he works at a university outside of Pittsburgh , and I think that is misleading What they probably mean is that the University of Pittsburgh is in the neighborhood known as Oakland, and while that is still a neighborhood of Pittsburgh, outsiders may not understand the geography of Pittsburgh, and how neighborhood lines are like gang lines. All you need to know is, yes, the University of Pittsburg [...]
I m going to think a lot about this book It is so damn simple, and so damn good It s a book about being a father, a husband, and a writer It s a book about being an untenured professor It s a book about Pittsburgh And it s a book about happiness My ultimate criterion for judging a book or a film or a poem is very basic Do I wish I d made it Not only do I wish I d written this tremendous book, I wish I d written all of Newman s work that I ve read The easiest way to say it is this I will buy ever [...]
Dave Newman s, Raymond Carver Will Not Raise Our Children, is the book my literary mind was craving just months ago What is so incredibly unique about Newman s novel is that if offers advice to writers without trying to sound overbearingly didactic Yes, he writes about writing, but in such a way that offers to diminish those romantic and stereotypical ideologies about writing and particularly how writing affected those authors and vice versa It isn t so much about the words, but about the people [...]
Nothing worth reading in this book unless you like drink a thons and the behaviors that go with it I was hoping there would be but after 174 pages I have to stop reading this I have important things to do with my time I think he even has a sequel coming out in 2014 Can t wait Now if I can just find a sucker on to buy it from me.
First It s not about a small college outside of Pittsburgh as the description says, but about the University of Pittsburgh, a large university IN Pittsburgh.Anyway this book was very engaging, entertaining and real By real I mean it had elements of sadness, desperation and joy, and really just showed how one could still love their life even with half the things around you going to pieces. It was an extremely accurate portrait of Pittsburgh, including the places, people and the amount of drinking [...]
I haven t read a white guy coming of middle age novel in a while Every time I would start to get into it, though, the protagonist would be unable to get through coming into contact with a woman without evaluating her tits or ass And, knowing this is very autobiographical, I started to wonder how true the voice is to the actual writer Is this making fun of the sad sack horny professor trope Or is it unselfaware It is a really good portrait of a job that is so grinding and unfulfilling that you st [...]
This is an exceptional novel that captures the beauty of Pittsburgh, the raw and realistic life of a writer and college professor, and the beauty of family, love, and friendship Raymond Carver Will Not Raise Our Children is about a writer, father, husband, and professor at Pitt who is a real person and shows readers what life is actually like trying to make a living doing what you love This blue collar man, Dan, is devoted to his family and I loved reading about his relationship with them, his f [...]
This book was a fun read Dave Newman s flawed but endearing protagonist, a creative writing professor trying to hold his tattered life together, reminded me of a sort of literary Louis C.K Sometimes he s an awful person, but he pulls off telling the story so you re on his side anyway Bonus points for the affectionate descriptions of Pittsburgh.
Ever thought about getting a graduate degree Thought about maybe working in academia Read this book and you might reconsider A scathing look at the world of academia and a a true portrait of the city of Pittsburgh.

My review at Vol 1 Brooklyn vol1brooklyn 2013 01 1
It s been a while since I came across a novel I couldn t put down, but Dave Newman compelled me to pile through 300 plus pages in four days while I was in New York missing home. From the onset I knew what Dan Charles wanted and I was constantly surprised at the lengths he would go to attain those things All the while, though, there was honesty in his drive, and I could believe it.Dan wants to live the wild lifestyle of Hemingway and Thompson, so he philanders, does coke, and drinks with his alcoh [...]
This is a quick and enjoyable read, written by a local author Pittsburgh Funny, yet sweet I would enjoy it, even if the setting were different, but the local references and idioms made it even fun Cute story I read about this book when it was first released, and I added it to my wishlist Then, the kindle version was available super cheap, so I bought it I hadn t yet read it when my birthday came around you know how the kindle quickly develops a giant to read shelf Much to my surprise, my 12 yea [...]
Really enjoyed this, especially the Pittsburgh connections One complaint it s Dee s cafe not Dee s bar Just nitpicking It was really engaging and charming.
Initially, I couldn t help thinking that the narrator was a bit of a jag off Nevertheless, I was compelled to finish it and I m glad that I did.
